From the Editor: Contest for the 2014 GUIDE TO LITERARY AGENTSSo, as you know from last week, the 2014 GUIDE TO LITERARY AGENTS is out everywhere. It’s big, updated, and full of agent info to help writers. Exciting! Now here’s my next bit of good news: The awesome annual giveaway contest is currently underway. I’m giving away three copies of the book to random commenters. Simply comment on the blog post here to enter. And along the way, hear the testimonials & blurbs of 44 writers who used GLA to get published. The contest lasts for two weeks. Not enough good news for you? FINE. I just debuted as a guest blogger on Writers in the Storm. My first brand new post is a collection of advice from literary agents. Oftentimes, when I interview agents, I finish the interview by asking them for any tips they haven’t yet discussed. The results of this question are fascinating and helpful nuggets of info for authors everywhere. For the post, I am giving away a copy of the 2014 GLA or the 2014 CWIM to a winning random commenter.

Good luck with both contests! This is one of my last newsletters before heading out to Los Angeles at the end of the month for our WD west coast writers conference. If you are going to the event, I will see you there. Come up and say hello!

Until next time, good luck writing, agent hunting, and building your writer platform!

20+ Agents at Our West Coast WD Conference: Sept. 27-29, 2013Coming up fast is WD’s own west coast writers’ conference in Los Angeles, Sept. 27-29, 2013 . It’s a great chance for west coast writers to pitch literary agents, get instruction on writing, meet other writers, and learn about the industry. This is WD’s second year for a west-coast event, and I am excited to get to LA next month and meet attendees.Naturally you’ll want to check out the conference schedule and all the details. One of the first items you should investigate is the 20+ agents & editors who will be in attendance taking pitches at our large Pitch Slam Event. Also, as a promo incentive, WD is currently offering something very cool. If you sign up for our conference on or before Aug. 30, you become a Writer’s Digest Conference VIP($350 value). You’ll get all kinds of goodies, including recordings of all the sessions you may have missed at the conference. Attending all the sessions you want to attend can be difficult at an event, but becoming a Conference VIP immediately takes care of this concern.

If you are attending the conference, I will see you there! A simple thing you can do to prepare is check out a recent article of mine called “Tips for Pitching a Literary Agent at a Conference” over on The Write Life Blog. It can be a good primer for the main event!
