When my pen hit the paper this morning I was thinking about writing an article about the top 5 tips to drive holiday book sales and then found myself wondering down another path. (That article I will write up next.) I got to thinking about what every author really wants for Christmas…book sales. Then I imagined that authors around the world are suddenly rekindling their holiday spirit with Father Christmas and started daydreaming about the letter they might write to help make their wish come true.

The letter might go something like this:

Dear Santa,

It has been a while since you’ve heard from me as I had stopped believing in you many years ago. Perhaps it was the peer pressure from my classmates, telling me, “There is no Santa Clause” but whatever it was, I’ve been on my own and thought I was doing just fine. I’m an adult now, but this year as the holiday approaches, I’ve thought about what I really want this Christmas and well, I think you’re the only one who can truly help me.

Santa, all I want for Christmas is to sell more books. You see Santa, I am an author. It was my dream come true to write a book, then my next dream was to have it published, but what I didn’t realize was that I was only beginning my journey. Really what I wanted was to have people read my book and so this Christmas I’m asking for you to put my Christmas book in your magical bag of toys and gifts, and leave it under the tree for new readers to find on Christmas morning.

You can order my book at Amazon.com or at BarnesandNoble.com. You’re welcome to contact me directly and buy at a discount, but that might ruin the surprise for me. It really is up to you.

Santa, it would mean the world to me and be my favorite Christmas wish if you could deliver enough books to get me on the NY Times Bestsellers list. I’m figuring since I haven’t asked for much these last 40 years, that might work out for us both. Gift for me and one less present you need to think about making in your workshop. Thank you in advance and I promise to keep believing if you deliver.

My best to Mrs. Claus.

Sincerely,

Your favorite author
