Competition is held at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel in Pomona

Wednesday, May 15:
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Day 1 of the wine competition. Judging held at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel (in a ballroom). From approximately 8-10 a.m., judges gather for introductions and instructions. Panels will begin judging at approximately 10 a.m. Writers will sit with the judges and evaluate wines (guests’ scores will not be included in final scoring of wines)
6:30 p.m. Judges dinner – Table-to-Farm dinner in the Sheraton’s urban garden. Meal prepared by executive chef David Teig, with wine pairing. Entertainment and opportunity to speak with wine judges.
Thursday, May 16:
9 a.m.- 10:30 a.m. Breakfast in the McKinley’s Grille Garden RoomOpportunities:
Speak with renowned wine makers, buyers, experts. See how the process of judging wine (on a point-scale system) is done. Experience the one-of-a-kind Table-to-Farm dinner. The Sheraton and Fairplex manage an urban garden on the grounds of Fairplex. The Sheraton uses seasonal produce from the garden in its Table-to-Farm dinners and on the menu of McKinley’s Grille. Enjoy a stay at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel & Conference Center – one of Starwood’s premier all-suite hotels. Tour the new conference center.
Only eight people (+ spouses) can experience this fun trip. Spouses will not be part of the judging experience, they will be expected to attend the winemaker dinner. Your group leader wll be IFWTWA member Roger Paige.

You must be on assignment and produce a post experience article. IFWTWA dues must be current and your IFWTWA profile up to date. Roger and Linda will pre-screen candidates. Final approval comes from Leslie Galerne-Smith | PR & Communications Manager for the FAIRPLEX.

Maralyn Dennis Hill, The Epicurean Explorer, was born to travel and tell the tale. From local cuisine to Michelin Star, simple to gourmet, Maralyn enjoys it all. Discovering flavors, spices, and trends worldwide, from Bocuse d’Or to being a judge at the Turks & Caicos Conch Festival, Oregon Chocolate Festival and others, or interviewing chefs, she is intrigued by all aspects of spa and culinary tourism. As a professional food, wine and travel writer, through guest spots on monthly radio shows, to being editor and contributor to over eight publications, print and online, she reaches several million on a continual basis, domestically and internationally. Maralyn’s years of writing incentive programs and meeting planning expanded her talent for digging below the surface for the unusual. She thrives on discovering different cultures and customs and feels it’s the best geography lesson ever. Also, she derives great satisfaction applying her organizational development skills. She has co-authored three books and hosted a television show for Time Warner Cable from 2002 to 2006. She is past president of The International Food Wine & Travel Writers Association (12-2008 to 12-2012) and continues as a board member and co-chair of the Conference and Media Trip Committee. Maralyn is always ready to explore different flavors of various cultures and share their tale. People she meets along the way are the best part.
