Material from the “Reporter Connection” has been on other posts.  Bill and Steve Harrison send out “Reporter Connection.” There are always suggestions at the top of each issue. Today’s seemed quite appropriate. One of my editors is delighted when I do top 8, 10, 15, or whatever. Lists draw attention and I’ve discovered it first hand.

Personally, lists are not my favorite thing. But, I know they work.

Here are Steve’s words:

Ever notice how people love lists? When I saw the words “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” on the cover of Rolling Stone at the newsstand, I grabbed it. Simply HAD to see ifBabe I’m Gonna Leave You was in the top 25 (It wasn’t.) Also wanted to find songs I could download to my ipod. The point is it “hooked” me into buying a magazine I don’t usually buy.

If you want to get a lot of publicity, why not create your own list? Two college professors received tons of publicity and launched their careers to new heights by releasing the “Beloit College Mindset List” every year. It lists surprising trends and influences on each freshman class. For example, members of the class of 2014 almost never wear wrist watches, hardly ever use snail mail, and believe the U.S. and Russia have always been friendly. Remember to make sure your list is entertaining AND useful, and you’ll find the media knocking on your door.

Speaking of music, I’ll be watching my son play with his rock band tonight. Can’t wait!
